Botox®

What is botox?
Botox® is an injectable liquid used to temporarily treat wrinkles that are causes by muscles of expression. Some muscles can be treated and others cannot.

There are a number common areas that are treated with Botox®:
• The lower forehead to prevent the appearance of frowning and the vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows (referred to as “11’s”). • The upper forehead to prevent the horizontal wrinkles of the forehead that occur when lifting your eyebrows. • The area outside the eyes (“crows feet”) to prevent the wrinkles that occur on the outside of the eyes when squinting.

It’s important to remember that wrinkles present without animating our faces cannot be treated with Botox®. Only wrinkles that form during muscle contraction can be improved with Botox®. Wrinkles that are present without animation can potentially be addressed with dermal fillers, fat grafting, or surgery.

Your initial consultation will take 15-20 minutes and based on the examination and your goals, an individualized treatment plan will be discussed.

Botox® is injected in the office. You do not require any anesthetic, other than an ice pack on the skin for 5 minutes prior to the procedure. The injections take only a few minutes.

The most common complication is bruising, as most people are returning to work or activity the same day. The forehead and temple areas have a lot of blood vessels and so holding good pressure with the gauze after the injections can help avoid bruising as even a small bruise can be visible.

There is a very small chance, around 2%, that Botox® injections in the forehead can affect one of the two muscles that elevate the eyelid causing a temporary droop to the upper eyelid. This can be improved with eye drops but can persist for 2-3 months. Like all treatments with Botox®, this is only temporary and resumes to normal activity once the effect has worn off.

Botox® will typically take 3-4 days to take full effect and last 3 to 6 months. This means, that the effects are temporary and require ongoing treatment, typically every 3-6 months.
